CÁI TỐT NHỎ NHOI - English version by Bao Ngoc

The Infinitesimal Treasure

From the granite colored observatory deck cascade white pebbles, sprawling along the verandah until the back gate. In the moonlight, the tiny rocks shine like the Milky Way. The twenty eight lantern set acquired many years ago may flicker or rest under a dust layer. What help does it provide? For from you irradiates moonshine distancing the 28 stars in unequaled luminescence. Engulfing me in utter happiness, though late in coming. I, the selected King, in your vibrant self, full of music and incense.

The Magnolia tree in Spring gloriously displays purple blooms that outnumber its leaves. Flowers exude a delicate and lofty fragrance, reminding me of your scent. Thus, I grafted a branch and planted when roots emerged. To dot the Northwest end of the garden with beauty and grace, using minerals and fertilizers. Watering it often, with praise and unending love and care.

However, the moon fades, stars recede. Of the flower trees in the Northwest end, only two dried branches remain. Shame on me, the unruly son of heaven, who bruises the existence of delicate flowers in the imperial court. These are vestiges of the intense nurturing provided during the grafting and later on. An absolute waste of time and efforts! All for you in the end.

Also deceitful is the cluster of "Deeply arousing" Hibiscus. Sparse white blooms among lush foliage, cajoling in Spring or dangling imperturbably in Summer. Stems gorged with vitality that droop languidly under the frost. Flowers enclose a deep longing for the tropical sun, alike me, living in this foreign land. A tough emigrate for more than two decades, who harbors a deep and painful love for the country. By which fate were you attracted to me and my shortcomings?

There are two facets to each individual, a dichotomy of good and bad. Affection and hate. My lovable part is insignificant and hidden inside. Luckily by you has been detected, whereas the ugly part is displayed outwardly. Quite frequently, still shunned away, in deepest love.

I suddenly recall Vi Tieu Bao - the Infinitesimal Treasure by Kim Dung. What a lore of meaning in this wonderful name, to express a microscopically small treasure. An illegal son of seven purported fathers, the character was born under bad stars, raised in brothels, and grew up in illiteracy. Unskilled and full of vices, lazy, dissolute, untruthful, a man of no integrity. Beneath a tough hide, he squandered lies in all directions, attracted to any site for fun and play, and turned away in danger. Passionate for lust and gambling as fireflies burning near the flames. Vi Tieu Bao coveted money and disdained material riches, loving life and daring death.

Infinitely small in this outcast is the chivalrous spirit. Although afraid of dying, he braves death for laudable causes. In the name of love and friendship, at the height of glory. Not concealing his humble and unlearned position, still loving his destitute mother at work in the brothels.

Darling, around us, people love to fight and lose battles. They are obsequious minds that fawn in front of the powerful, and crush the meek under their feet. They brandish titles, bluffing teachers, betraying friends. Ungrateful, they display their valor as inherent. As if never thought of influence, or asked help from others. The ray of light to us strikes their blind eyes as thorns. Our misfortune is their triumph. Behind the facade of vain feelings and false affections.

Do we need to hide the late joys? Conceal the encompassing happiness, obstruct the mountain of bliss? We are each other's halo and shadow. The soul of poetry and essence of music, sharing ardent love together. Thank you for the words of thundering passion, for ever and ever. I send to you my utmost yearning for the long river. Unending in infinity.
